This recipe is from 'May Byron's Rations Book' which was published in 1918. It has recently been re-published as 'The Great War Cook Book: From trench pudding to carrot marmalade' and has a great range of recipes, including plenty of cakes, biscuits and puddings!
- 8 oz oatmeal
- 8 oz flour
- 2 oz fat
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking powder
- water or milk
Rub fat into the flour
Mix with oatmeal
Add salt and baking powder
Mix into a stiff paste using either water or milk
Roll out to a quarter of an inch thick and cut into biscuit shapes
Bake on a tin in a moderate oven for about twenty minutes
This is a very simple biscuit to make and tasted really good although quite salty - if I made the biscuits again I would add less salt. May Byron just says to use 'fat' and doesn't suggest which kind so I guess you just used what you had in the kitchen. I used butter so they possibly tasted a bit nicer than they might have done with a different sort of fat!
